How we build a pool deck

A Connecticut pool deck spends half the year under snow and the other half wet, sunbaked and full of bare feet. The details that matter: the deck has to pitch away from the pool, the joint between the deck and the coping has to stay sealed, and the surface has to grip when it's wet.

We pour new decks, resurface old ones that are still sound, and fix the joint and drainage problems that let water under the coping, where it freezes and does the real damage.

Pool decks and Connecticut winters

Close the joint before you close the pool. Water that gets under the deck or behind the coping in fall freezes all winter. Check the coping joint every year at closing.

Salt-water pools. Splash from salt-chlorinated pools can be hard on concrete and sealers over time. Rinse the deck now and then and keep it sealed.

Scheduling. Spring is the busiest time for pool work. Booking a deck in fall or winter for a spring pour is the easiest way to have it finished before the pool opens.

Questions we hear about pool decks

Should I resurface or replace my pool deck?

Resurface if the deck is structurally sound: cracks are hairline and nothing has heaved or sunk. Replace if sections have moved, cracks are wide, or the deck pitches toward the pool.

How do you keep a concrete pool deck from being slippery?

Texture and grit. A knockdown or broom finish grips well, and any sealer we put down gets a slip-resistant additive.

What color pool deck stays coolest?

Lighter colors reflect more sun. Charcoal and dark browns get noticeably hotter under bare feet.

How long does a new pool deck take?

Most residential decks take about a week on site, plus cure time before heavy furniture. Stamped decks take a little longer.

Can you work around my pool builder?

Yes. The electrician's bonding grid has to be installed and inspected before we pour, and we coordinate coping and drains with the pool contractor.

Do salt-water pools damage concrete decks?

They can, slowly. Salt splash plus freeze-thaw is hard on the surface, so rinse the deck, keep it sealed and keep water from pooling.
